trench Stories from the Naval Academy, a tribute to Coach Spencer
Guests: August Roitsch & Dr. J. Marshall Green III (Navy offensive linemen under Paul Johnson)
It's Notre Dame vs. Navy week, and GolfDoc sits down with two men who lived in the trenches for the Naval Academy: center August Roitsch (#74, USNA '05), a former Navy lieutenant, and right tackle Dr. J. Marshall Green III (#64). A tribute to Navy offensive line coach Todd Spencer, plus the 1927 Notre Dame-Navy game and Admiral Nimitz, Navy 46, Notre Dame 44 in triple overtime in 2007, the Emerald Bowl, Army-Navy in the snow, Navy at the White House, the GolfDoc on the Lisfranc injury, and Marshall's path to surgery and Walter Reed.
Notre Dame is on its bye week and Navy is next on Halloween, so GolfDoc hears from the other side of the Service Academy family. Otto Leone, Army quarterback (one-for-one, 64 yards vs. Temple), Ranger School grad and Notre Dame MBA, and John Robb, Army linebacker, 1990 co-captain and founder of The Stone Creek Group in Denver, cover calculus class before kickoff at Michie Stadium, plebe boxing, why Army–Navy is unlike any rivalry, a Desert Storm senior year, Champions Golf Club and Jackie Burke, the West Point network, and the advice they'd give a recruit choosing between NIL money and West Point.
Dedicated to Dr. Tom Parr, Joannie Parr and Bill York, who brought this episode together. Go Army. Go Irish.
